The Summer Garden Show

For the past few years one of the most popular annual events in the club diary is the garden show. In the past two years Gary Pritchard (BKKS judge) has visited the members ponds and judged our koi with some fantastic prizes.

Guest Speakers

During the Monthly Club Nights (second Wednesday of the month) we have a number of guest speakers coming to visit us. Always some of the best attended nights and in 2014 we had Mark Davis, Kevin Ellis, Malcolm Green Lee Burroughs etc.

Club Days Out

The club members are looking to be out and about a lot during 2015. Please see some of the visits to koi shows and koi retailers.

Our September Meeting

We returned to our usual meeting place in Dunstable in September for our monthly meeting, and we heard an honest account from Mark Hobden about his recent pond build, and you can see the presentation here:
He talked through a series of pictures and tables of information with pond and filtration specifications, and after an hour I think the whole club got a sense of how it feels to build a pond.
We also kicked off our judge-it-for-yourself competition.  The objective is to guess how the judging will go on the top 18 awards at our Garden Show.  It’s a repeat of last years quiz format – we lay out photos of each koi entered into the show over a couple of tables, grouping them in variety and size order.  Then the members walk around the tables, work out which koi they think will win the main overall awards and record the koi’s reference number on their quiz sheets.

Members making perusing the koi pictures and filling in their quiz sheets

Gary Pritchard will be judging the actual Garden Show and the winner of the judge-it-for-yourself quiz will be the person who gets most answers the same as Gary’s judging decisions.
The great thing about the quiz is that we open it to all members – whether they entered the Garden Show or not.   But it’s facilitated by all the members who entered the Garden Show, and who have basically provided the koi subjects that  enables us to have the quiz.
I’ll provide a longer write up of the Garden Show soon, but some quick stats for you:
11 members entered (that’s up from 9 last year, and 7 of the entrants this year are new to the club)
132 koi entered (thats up from 103 last year)
Next year I hope we’ll have 15 or 16 entrants to the Garden Show, and I expect to cap it at 16 entrants to fit into the time constraint we have of having only 2 days to do the benching.
Next month we have Syd Mitchell (aka Manky Sanke) visiting us, and he will be delivered a talk to the members at our usual club venue.

Marks pond build

Kangei koi club member Mark Hobden has been heavily involved in the hobby over the past few months, with the undertaking of his most recent pond build. Mark was kind enough to give a presentation to the club at Septembers meeting, and at short notice! It was very interesting to see how he went about the build, with great results. Having seen the pond and garden during the benching of his koi during our recent garden show, its a fantastic build, with great attention to detail, with some very good quality koi, and looking at the garden now, you'd never believe how it looked just a few months ago.
Below is the presentation Mark gave, a very honest blog of the highs and lows, enjoy.

Avenue fisheries special weekend

Hi, Avenue fisheries are holding a special sales weekend at the end of the month, which is always a great event, with plenty on offer. See below. I strongly advise a visit, there are bargains to be had for sure. :-)

Over this weekend we will be running our ever popular annual growing on competition. 200 high quality small koi from the breeders Oofuchi, Marusaka, Miyatora, Kaneko and Kawakami, along with some genuine tategoi from Takahashi not previously displayed in our retail area, will be photographed and measured. These koi will be priced between £35 and £85. Any of the koi purchased will be kept in our indoor growing on facility at 24ÂșC until Easter 2014, then cooled and made available for collection. The owner of the koi with the greatest increase in length and also the owner of the koi showing the most improvement in quality will have their purchase price refunded and receive a free 5kg bag of Medicarp and a 2kg bucket of Takazumi Growth food, the same as they were fed during the growing on period. Last year’s winning fish grew by just over 13cm. Photographs of the growing on competition fish will be on view on our website from the 26th of September.
