The Summer Garden Show

For the past few years one of the most popular annual events in the club diary is the garden show. In the past two years Gary Pritchard (BKKS judge) has visited the members ponds and judged our koi with some fantastic prizes.

Guest Speakers

During the Monthly Club Nights (second Wednesday of the month) we have a number of guest speakers coming to visit us. Always some of the best attended nights and in 2014 we had Mark Davis, Kevin Ellis, Malcolm Green Lee Burroughs etc.

Club Days Out

The club members are looking to be out and about a lot during 2015. Please see some of the visits to koi shows and koi retailers.

Koi Quiz Round Up‏

Bob Grinyer turned quiz master for last night’s Kangei club meeting and hosted a pub style koi quiz.  We split into 3 teams to test ourselves on over 40 questions covering a wide range of topics including koi varieties, water chemistry and pond management.  Bob designed and drafted the quiz to test us on information learned at Kangei events over the last year, and particularly from our guest speakers.

I’m going to call the quiz, Kangei’s 1st Annual Quiz in the hope we can persuade Bob to make this an annual event - testing us on information gleamed from guest speakers and at other events over the last year is a great leveller and helps us remember what we’ve learned.

This was the third month in a row that we welcomed new members to our club, and we look forward to getting to know new members Phil and Jo over the coming months.

Thanks again to Bob, and I will be emailing out soon about next month’s meeting which is at Cuttlebrook Koi Farm. So, please plan ahead for a different journey to the club night.

Happy koi keeping

Mark and Gaz Pond Build - Part Two

This is the second catch up post on the pond build. For those that missed part one, you can catch up here.

Since Christmas we have been able to push on with the project, benefitting from the mild winter weather (there were a couple of cold snaps but nothing that lasted very long), and have finished off a lot more of the pond build and surrounding landscaping.

The filter house roof was finished late December/early January, which was a great relief as that meant the building was basically watertight. We added guttering to take the water away to a soakaway, and will add water butts to collect water later on, with the drought conditions and hose pipe ban in the UK we should save all the water we can!

Pond Visit – John Darwood

What is it with the weather right now?  Continuous rain, but we’re in drought?  It doesn’t compute.  Nevertheless, John Darwood and his wife hosted a lovely pond visit last weekend for club members.
This was probably the first visit for many of the new members to John’s show piece pond, and John gave us a tour of his setup and filter room.  It’s a fantastic set up and has been featured by koi mag as a pond of the month – which you can read here:
John and his wife made us all feel comfortable in the inclement conditions with a gazebo protecting us from the rain and a lovely breakfast spread on the barbie.  Most of the club rolled up and spent some time looking at John’s wonderful pond set up and then migrated to the warmth of the barbie for koi chat and bacon butties.

John’s fish are doing well under the water line, despite the inclement conditions above it and he pointed out some of the new additions including a kohaku and doitsu ochiba which will be a joy to see grow and develop. The pond and garden work well together which makes quite an imposing pond blend in.

John’s pond vacuum set up is just as well thought out as his filter house – practical and well made; this vacuum pump sits on wheels so it’s easy to move around
A big thank you to John and his wife for putting on the pond visit, and hosting us this early in the year.
Happy koi keeping
